Excessive sweating
For when antiperspirants are no longer enough and sweating interferes with work, meeting people or dressing as you would like. The doctor injects botulinum toxin into the affected area, and the sweat glands there stop receiving the signal for a while.
What it is and when it is needed
Sweat glands are controlled by a nerve signal. Botulinum toxin injected into the skin interrupts that signal locally, so sweating in the treated area is reduced or nearly stops.
The effect is temporary and limited to the area treated. The rest of the body sweats as before, and temperature regulation is not disturbed.
- Usual areas: underarms, palms, feet.
- The effect is not immediate and wears off over time.
- Performed by a doctor, after your medical history has been reviewed.
Who it is for
The doctor first establishes whether the sweating is a sign of something else: thyroid disorders, medication, infection and hormonal changes can all cause it. In that case the cause is treated, not the sweat glands.
- Heavy underarm sweating when antiperspirants do not help.
- Damp palms that interfere with paperwork, equipment or shaking hands.
- Sweating feet and the discomfort that follows.
- Sweating that limits what you can wear or makes you avoid meetings.
How it goes
-
Consultation 30 min
The doctor examines the area, goes through your medication and conditions and, where needed, refers you for tests to find the cause.
-
Mapping 5–10 min
The area to be treated is marked and the injection points are planned.
-
Injections 15–20 min
Many shallow injections with a fine needle. For palms and feet a numbing cream is applied first.
-
Review
Two weeks later the doctor assesses the result and tops it up if needed.
Results
Sweating begins to decrease within 3–7 days, and the final result is visible after about two weeks.
It holds for several months and then fades gradually — how long depends on the area and the amount used. The treatment is repeated when sweating returns.
Some people notice slightly more sweating elsewhere on the body. This is a known effect and worth raising with the doctor at the consultation.
Aftercare
The injection points close within a few hours, so aftercare is short and simple.
- Do not rub or massage the treated area for a day.
- Avoid sauna, hot baths, swimming pools and hard exercise for the first day.
- For underarms, skip antiperspirant and shaving for a day.
- Do not lie face down or on the treated area for a few hours.
- Contact the clinic if you notice unusual sensations or muscle weakness.
Contraindications
Some are temporary, some absolute. The doctor decides at the consultation, having reviewed your medical history and medication.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis.
- Allergy to the components of the preparation.
- Inflammation, infection or broken skin in the area.
- Certain medicines, particularly aminoglycoside antibiotics.
- Acute illness or fever — the treatment is postponed.
- Sweating whose cause has not been established, where another condition is suspected.
Common questions
Will my whole body stop sweating?
No. The effect covers only the treated area; the rest of the body sweats as before.
How long does the result last?
Several months. The exact time depends on the area and the amount used; the doctor will say when to repeat it.
Does it hurt?
Underarms are usually tolerable. For palms and feet a numbing cream is used first, as the skin there is more sensitive.
When can I go back to work?
The same day. The restrictions concern heat and exercise on the first day only.
Is it harmful if sweat "cannot get out"?
Sweat glands cover the whole body and only a small area is treated, so temperature regulation is not affected.
Can I have it before a wedding or a holiday?
Yes, but not in the last week: the result develops over about two weeks, so plan ahead.
Are tests needed?
Not always. If another condition is suspected as the cause, the doctor will order tests before the treatment.
Who performs it
Dermatovenereologist. Consults on skin conditions, performs injectable treatments and trichoscopy — the examination of hair and scalp that hair loss treatment starts from. Works with botulinum toxin injections, lip and facial contour correction, biorevitalisation, polynucleotides and mesotherapy, treats excessive sweating and removes papillomas. A treatment is offered only after an examination: the cause first, the method second.
